Patricia Byrne

September 24, 1934 — January 2, 2023

Birmingham, Alabama

Patricia Byrne, 88, a lifelong resident of Birmingham, Alabama, died on January 2, 2023, at St. Martin's in the Pines.

She was born in Birmingham on September 24, 1934, to Thomas King Byrne and Ethel Hain Byrne, both of whom were originally from the city of Selma in Dallas County, Alabama. She attended The Brooke Hill School, now Altamont, and Ramsay High School. Following graduation from high school, she briefly attended Converse College and then the University of Alabama, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Beginning in the 1960s, Ms. Byrne worked in Washington, D.C., during several presidential administrations, on the staff at the White House. She was always very proud of her work at the White House, regardless of which administration she was serving.

Her passions included music, particularly opera; travel, which she embraced on a worldwide basis throughout her life; several garden clubs including The Redmont Park Garden Club and The Home Garden Club; and Independent Presbyterian Church, where she was a faithful member throughout her life.

Finally, she loved Alabama, including her family connections to Selma and the small farming community of Sardis in Dallas County, as well as her home in the Redmont neighborhood of Birmingham and Mountain Brook where she lived from birth. Ms. Byrne was predeceased by her parents; as well as by her brother Dr. Thomas King Byrne, Jr. and his wife Martha Judd Kirklin Byrne, and her nephew, Thomas Judd Byrne, all of Montgomery, Alabama. She is survived by her niece, Elizabeth Ann Byrne Dugan of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and her 3 great nephews, James Joseph Dugan, Jr., Michael Thomas Dugan, and Brendan Starr Dugan and numerous Hain cousins including Margaret Anne Hain Beers of Sardis, Alabama and Jane Hain Ray of Charleston, West Virginia.

The family wishes to thank all the staff at St. Martin's in the Pines for their compassionate care and loving support during the last few years of Patricia's life.

A graveside service will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery (Hain family section) in Sardis, Alabama on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Lant B. Davis officiating.

In lieu of flowers, Patricia's family suggests that memorials be made in her memory to Independent Presbyterian Church at 3100 Highland Ave South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205, or another charity of your choice.

Selma Funeral Home provided her final arrangements.
