Howard Hershel Strickland died peacefully at home September 26, 2007 after an extended illness. He was 81 years old.
Mr. Strickland was born March 1, 1926 in Athens, GA. He served his country in the Army Air Corp in the European Theater of WWII. Mr. Strickland achieved success as an entrepreneur and businessman combining diverse experience, including general contracting, finance, administration, marketing, organization and sales. Through his tenacious work ethic and pioneering vision, Mr. Strickland made significant improvements to Selma's historic Water Avenue. He was originator of several local businesses including The Warehouse Nightclub opened in April of 1976, the Cabaret and Major Grumbles Restaurant, a now famous icon in Selma and greater Alabama. Community-minded, Mr. Strickland served the interest of Selma's citizens for years, beginning in 1990, through the Selma Housing Authority, from which he retired as Section 8 Director. He was a politically active citizen and a man who had profound and eternal love for his country and its ideals.
Mr. Strickland is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Thelma Strickland of Athens, GA.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Martha Prince Strickland; sons, Robert H. Strickland of Biloxi, MS, Sam Evans Strickland of Iuka, MS and James (Diana) Lundie of Concord, NC; daughters, Susan (Jim) Harper of Shawnee, KS and Misti (Gary) Frederickson of Ocean Springs, MS; grandchildren, Matthew, Robert and Jamie Harper of KS, Ian and Ami Evans of Louisville, KY; Dianne Smitherman, daughter of Mr. Strickland's best friend, Joe; Mr. and Mrs. Ray (Sheila) Brown and loving and caring members of the extended family.
We wish to express sincere thanks for all the staff of Park Place and Wiregrass Hospice. We feel deep, eternal gratitude for Daniel Clower, MD and appreciation for the enduring strength of Cassie. To all whose life was touched and influenced by Howard, we hope and pray your memories are many, pleasant and enriching. Howard will truly be missed by all his friends and family. We are confident he was welcomed home with gusto by Joe.
Funeral services will be Friday, September 28, 2007, 12:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. James Harper and Joe Knight officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m
